Quiksilver sought the firm’s creative originality in seeking to design a vibrant, but modest cost office, studio, showroom, a theater space for company presentations and fashion shows, and a development and shipping center that captures the “vibe” of the company’s surf oriented “boardriding” image. The 350,000 SF headquarters and distribution center for this international apparel firm is located in Huntington Beach. The entire building was transformed from a dark warehouse space to a bright, vibrant, and daylit workplace. Based on the program requirement for strong integration amongst the design, production, and marketing teams, the large floorplate was developed as a series of smaller scale “neighborhoods”. The “neighborhoods” are open office “eddy”-like spaces off of the “boulevards”, each created by regularly spaced enclosed offices. The careful order of the open plan and closed office environments belie the dynamic nature of the spatial forms that create them.
